Character Name: Kassan
Species: Pokemon, Delphox
Canon: Pokemon X/Y
Canon Point: Post-game, but has nothing to do with the main plot.
History:
  • Bred as a customized starter Pokemon by Smogon University. It's like regular starters, only these are for university graduates and/or assholes with a lot of money who want the best of the best without any effort. As such, Kassan had a well-cared-for, if impersonal early life, with perfect IVs and EV training.

  • Was given to a graduate. Said graduate proved to be an astonishing jerk, treating his team as nothing more than tools, and objects to take his frustrations out on if he ever lost a battle. It was an abusive time.

  • This went on for years, until the team up and decided that enough was enough. After weeks of planning, Kassan and the rest of the trainer's Pokemon started a mutiny. It went over exactly how one may imagine with six highly-trained Pokemon against a human taken by surprise. Kassan was the one to land the killing blow.

  • The team went their separate ways after that, some to other, less abusive trainers, some to the wild, and Kassan... didn't have anywhere to go so he decided to stay in Lumiose City as a street rattata, living off of scraps and the occasional prize money from underground battling rings.

Personality: Kassan is a snarky, jaded, self-serving sort that has obtained freedom after a life in captivity, and has no intention of changing it anytime soon. He does what he wants and resents anyone who would try to push him around against his will. As such, most of his choices since going off on his own have all revolved around being self-centered, be it stealing for food, muscling out others for shelter, or simply doing something stupid entirely for the entertainment factor. If he wants something, he's going to try his best to get it, if for no other reason than to say he did. He's got a lot of ambition, but no direction.

After the whole debacle with his trainer, Kassan has a strong distrust towards humans, thinking them all slavedrivers in the same fashion as his trainer was. He will go out of his way to antagonize people, especially if one tries so much as to brandish a Pokeball in his direction. Towards other Pokemon, however, he's a little better. He still enjoys antagonizing others for the laughs, but he won't go nearly as far as he does with humans. He will even cooperate with other feral Pokemon in the city, but only if it suits him, and only if it wouldn't be worth it to mess with them instead.

All that said, he does have some semblance of morals. He values his freedom, and as such will never put another Pokemon in his situation. He won't lord favors or controlling factors over others if he can so help it, and is much more sympathetic to Pokemon that have trainers similar to his. He may also step in on feral Pokemon disputes in the city if there is clear bullying going on, but he will try to make up an excuse saying it was only for his own benefit.

Abilities, Powers, Afflictions:
-Fire-Type moves: Predicably, being a Fire-type Pokemon means that Kassan is adept at creating and manipulating fire. If it involves shooting fire at stuff (eg, Flamethrower), he can do it.
-Psychic-Type Moves: Kassan's secondary typing is psychic. He has some skill with telekenesis (Psychic), and can boost his power with meditation (Calm Mind), but his most trademark ability is traditional pyromancy, or divining the future using a flame. By staring into an open flame, Kassan can catch glimpses of future events and get a general sense of what may happen in the near future. This skill is imperfect, however, and he himself admits that the very act of looking can change it.
-Ability: Magician: As an extent of his psychic ability, Kassan is capable of taking items from targets he hits in battle, usually in the form of short-range teleportation using the attack as a distraction. This may fail if the target has a good grip on the item, or if Kassan is holding something else at the time.

Path Preference:
-Orphan: Kassan has all the traits of a wildfire- Ambition to do anything, but no direction to go. He has no purpose, no goals, no motivations other than self-satisfaction, just a wave of heat and flame, free in the wild with nowhere to go. He had no goals or reason to make goals while under his trainer, so he never really thought about what he wanted in life until he was free, and to this day he still doesn't know.
-Discovery: Though he wouldn't admit it, Kassan does have quite a curious nature. He isn't content to leave things as they are, and will instead poke at it with a stick for no other reason than to find out what happens. This is how most of his interactions go, anyway, him taunting and poking at others to see what they do. This is the more positive outlook on Kassan's nature: while still not having direction, he is still explorative.
Element Preference:
-Fire: The most obvious choice, given his Fire typing, natural fire powers, and aggressive, free nature. He can be a powerful force to be reckoned with when he wants to do something, but without control, he is like to simply burn himself out.
-Light: Less goodness and holiness, more knowledge and wisdom. While Kassan is a fire-type Pokemon, he has a secondary typing in Psychic, and specializes in divination abilities.
-Shadow: The other side of the coin. Kassan is generally distrustful of others, and living as a glorified hobo in Lumiose means that one must take some shadier, more subversive actions to survive.
Anima Creature Description: A large, orange-and-black caterpillar creature that can lengthen and shorten at will. Rather than an insectoid head, however, it is topped with a five-petaled, vaguely flaming flower. The creature can also harden itself to the consistency of wood, though it becomes immobile when doing so. It is capable of vocalizing to some extent by heating up the air around it to drive it through its petals and leaves, causing them to vibrate and make sound similar to that of a small woodwind instrument.

The egg state is that of a small, crystalline seed, barely larger than a few centimeters and warm to the touch. As it matures, it will be able to contort itself into larger and more complex shapes, as well as extend vine and leaf-like structures out from its main body for varying uses. Additional flowers will appear on it as it reaches maturity, though these will only be four-petaled, and take a shape resembling butterfly wings.

The creature's diet is mostly detritus, creating such by burning plants and feeding on the combusted nutrients. It may also consume unburnt leaves should it require water, though it does tend to be picky, favoring lettuce, aloe plants, and legumes. There's no dietary reason for this; it's just annoyingly picky.

Anima Traits:
  • Curious. The creature responds frequently to stimuli by getting closer to examine it, and will often extend vines to play with and manipulate things.
  • Vindictive. Will respond aggressively to those that harm it or its master, or those that its master feels a strong dislike for (yay empathetic link!)
  • Independent. Though it does hang off of Kassan most of the time, it more often than not has its own thing to do, unrelated to Kassan's activity.
  • Creative. It will often contort itself to mimic shapes it sees, and will sometimes combine multiple shapes to create something new. It also will scratch patterns into surfaces when its bored, which most often take the form of Fibonacci spirals and patterns.

RP Sample: A little old, but it's still relevant.

Character Info:
Name: Kassan
Age: ...Yes. (Pokemon aging rates are nebulous at best, so I'm going with "the equivalent of a human in their mid 20s")
AU/PG/CANON/OC: Pokemon OC

Key Points:

  • Bred to be a Starter Pokemon for graduates of a prestigious battling university

  • Given to and named by a trainer, headed off to Kalos to fight in the League there

  • Trainer proved to be an incredible asshole. Effective at battling, but an asshole

  • Kassan learned how to battle well. He enjoyed it, but trainer soured his experience.

  • Trainer eventually abandoned Kassan in Lumiose City for a "better fire-type".

  • Now lives on the streets of Lumiose with a general distrust of humans. Makes a living by stealing and battling overconfident trainers in side alleys. Generally a jerk to everyone, but has a soft spot for other Pokemon in his position. (You wouldn't believe the number of Froakies and Fletchlings abandoned around route 7)

History:
Smogon University is one of the top institutions in the Pokemon world for learning how to battle effectively. Graduating from the program is a huge honor, but students and alumni are known to be elitist jerks, looking down on anyone who does not battle in the exact style they do. Kassan, then an unnamed Fennekin, was one of many Pokemon specially bred by the university to act as starters for graduates. The breeding program was rather nice, and Kassan spent his infancy in fair luxury and comfort: nice breeders, good care, good food, the whole nine yards of textbook Pokemon care and raising.

And then he was handed off to his trainer, a cold, no-nonsense man that gave Kassan his name for no other reason than traditional obligation. He was a good trainer, but only in the sense that he won a lot of battles. Training sessions were hard, failure was met with beatings from the rest of the team, and communication was limited to sharply barked orders and angry yelling. It was incredibly impersonal, to the point where very few of the team even knew the trainer's name.

This arrangement lasted for several years, until the trainer decided to start making replacements. It happened one by one, team members being replaced with "stronger, better" Pokemon. Those replaced were simply abandoned on the spot, rather than being stored. It was a blessing, really, getting that freedom from oppression. For Kassan, it happened in Lumiose City, where he was dumped on the street in favor of a Talonflame that "better fit the team composition". The only real life he knew had just left him, but tat wasn't a bad thing.

Nonetheless, it took Kassan a while to adjust. All he really knew how to do was fight, and so that's what he did to get by. He started simple and direct: mugging people in the back streets, stealing their money before their Pokemon could react, stealing food where he could... As the novelty of freedom wore off, however, he started playing more by the rules, if only to better evade police and Pokemon control. He participated in underground battling rings, taking out Pokemon rather than humans for prize money. It earned him something of a name: the wild "demon Delphox" that spelled the end of any poor sap stupid or unlucky enough to take him on. Even without a trainer, Kassan still held his own, being able to take most anything down in one hit.

His reputation garnered some benefits. He had something of a rapport with other wild and feral Pokemon in Lumiose, though it only extended insofar as "Don't try to fight him" and/or "do good by him and he'll probably give you food." He was considering making something of it, perhaps making a gang or organizing the other feral Pokemon in some fashion, but then he fell down a hole and ended up in some odd temple with a rock glued to his face.

Personality: Kassan is a snarky, crass, and generally self-serving jerk that has tasted freedom and perhaps took it too far. Gone are the days of being a slave to a trainer that didn't even consider letting his name be known. Everything he does now is for himself, even if it means going about it with the same sort of cold ruthlessness his former trainer did. He is a free spirit, and will often do things just because he wants to, or because it's simply entertaining. From this, he's gotten into a habit of insulting people to their faces when interacting with them, given that humans generally can't understand Pokemon. He does the same to other Pokemon, but to a lesser degree, and will sometimes stop if called out on.

More often than not, he will go out of his way to refuse others, though he is currently in the process of learning that favor is a currency, and gaining it from others can help benefit him in turn. As of now, however, it's little more to him that just that: currency. Something to be held and spent later on. Friendship doesn't mean much to him, as he's never taken the time to give it a chance.

His selfish attitude is furthered by a strong sense of ambition, which is probably the only thing that hasn't been stamped out of him since before being given to that trainer. He was a special breed, after all. The best product from the best breeders from the best institution, to be given to the best trainers. He was destined for great things, and he's going to work to get them, trainer or not. If nothing else, it's that ambition that has allowed him to keep going, even while digging through the dumpster of Restaurant Le Nah for the first thing he'll eat in three days. It's gotten him the inklings of a reputation so far, so why stop there?

All that said, he does possess a great deal of sympathy for those caught in the same situation he once was. He knows the pain of an abusive superior, and is much more likely to help out Pokemon with abusive trainers, if only in little ways. He doesn't admit to doing it out of sympathy, however, instead disguiing it under more selfish pretenses, like knocking an asshole trainer out with Hypnosis to take his cash and not give his team a few moments' reprieve, or insult them to their face to be mean and not to entertain those under him.

Gem Considerations: Cinnabar. Cinnibar primarily symbolizes releasing buried resentment, which is the source of most of Kassan's vices: resentment towards that trainer. The gem may subtly encourage him to let it go instead of seeking revenge. In addition, Cinnibar is tied to magic, divination, and fire, all traits inherent to Delphoxes as a whole. It also promotes prosperity, a trait that goes hand in hand with Kassan's ambition. It's all about the future and moving forward, his primary driving forces.

Power considerations:

  • Pyrokinesis (ie, Flamethrower)

  • Telekinesis (ie, Psychic)

  • Divination

Losing his abilities would start as a crippling blow. His ability to fight is all he has, and as that is being taken from him? Might as well go all the way and kill him entirely now. He'll be devastated.

This feeling will only last up until the point that he learns he can get them back. As soon as he knows that, he will have an immediate goal and be able to pick himself up off the ground and press forward. It will be difficult for him, but seeing others that are more powerful having started in his position will be all the encouragement he needs.
